WHAT ARE BRIDGE READERS?
Bridge Readers are quite simply proper stories for weaker and reluctant readers.
Adapted from Cathy Farr’s original young adult fantasy adventures, Moon Chase and Moon Crossing, Bridge Readers have been developed by Bite Books to help ‘bridge the gap between learning to read and reading to learn’. They are technically suitable for a reading age of 8 years, but are ideal for weaker readers up to about 15 years.
We have worked closely with a speech and language specialist to ensure that the books are technically suitable for children (8-15) with language and communication problems; we have also taken advice from mainstream teachers and SEN coordinators in both primary and secondary schools (and feedback on the finished books is great – thank goodness!).
Teach Secondary described Moon Chase as ‘a story burning to be told’ suitable for teen weaker or reluctant readers.’
Special Children featured a review by Rebeka Brumby, SENCO at St Crispin’s School, Wokingham: ‘The students…have a low reading ability and lack confidence in their reading skills. They have a range of SEND…and yet they all engaged wholeheartedly with Moon Chase and the activities from the teacher’s workbook, which helped staff to consolidate their reading…One of our most reluctant readers was soon hooked…read more, more frequently and for longer, which helped improve his fluency and his comprehension.’ The pupils at St Crispin’s are now working with Moon Crossing.
